Debut author Roth's The Midnight Garden is a beautifully written novel with strong
themes of hope, loss, and love. Hope is a young widow who has never left the small town
where she grew up and is just going through the motions of life. As she goes from being a
young bride to a grieving widow, Hope cannot seem to escape her gossiping town. After an
altercation at a wedding, she runs into Will, a screenwriter who is in town trying to help his
family's inn stay afloat. While sparks begin to fly between these two, Hope seeks out an
eccentric newcomer, Maeve. Maeve makes healing teas and communes with the deceased
and seems to have won over some of the townspeople, while others—including Will—are
more than skeptical. Hope is looking for forgiveness from her late husband, and Maeve
shows her that she really needs to forgive herself and finally start to live. Readers of Jenny
Colgan will enjoy this rising author.
